Show Some Love for Local Business

Ray Sands Glass loves small local businesses, and not just because we are one!  We love the Rochester community – the friends, family and neighbors, the friendly faces on the street and in our shop, even all those other drivers out there on the road!  This community has been home to Ray Sands Glass for over 60 years and for many of our employees (and owners) this city holds a piece of family heritage.  We care enough to want what’s best for the Rochester area and it’s citizens, and that means local businesses.

Many people don’t realize how local businesses stimulate local economy so much more than big corporations.  When you spend a dollar here in Rochester at a local business, 43 cents of it stays right here in our area, but when you spend that dollar with a company based elsewhere, only about 19 cents stays here in our city.  Since small businesses are more likely to spend your dollar with other local establishments, you really are investing in your own community, and when you do that, that dollar comes back around to you in the end.

We often go out of our way to spend locally –  we buy an lease our vehicles from local dealerships, we buy our power tools, compressors and urethanes from people right here in our area.  In our efforts to back other local businesses, we have found that these small outfits do the same for us – not just by buying our products and services, but standing by their own, and with top quality service and accountability.

So please join us in supporting this wonderful city we call home, and all those neighbors and friends who benefit from a thriving local business community.  Buy from someone who appreciates your business, someone who is paying taxes to your city, someone who is spend their dollars in your own backyard and someone who cares for this community as much as you do. In short, buy local.  In this little slice of the world, our troubles are all the same and RSG is always glad you came!

Ray Sands Glass Works With Genesee Country Village Museum

As many Western New Yorkers know, the Genesee Country Village and Museum is one of our much beloved local treasures – our very own bit of history.  GCV&M  is a full living history of a 19th century village, complete with over 50 authentically restored buildings, and live interactive programs that educate children and adults alike with a hands on approach to history.

We recently had an opportunity to work with GCV&M, which was really an honor for us, because Ray Sands Glass has a special appreciation for this live museum, not just for the dynamic live history lesson, but for a bit of personal history located amongst it artifacts!  The father of owners Dave and Frank Burns was born in one of the buildings currently used for live demonstrations, even had his tonsils removed by the local doctor at the table  inside! What Else Would You Like to Find at Ray Sands?

Over the years, we have expanded our services from our roots in windshield replacement and chip repair to include many other auto and residential services that we thought could benefit our community.   With the introduction of more services we can now remove those dents and dings from your car’s body as well, or apply a protective film to your newly installed windshield and top of the line window tint for side and rear windows.  We can even restore your car’s headlights to a shiny, bright, like-new condition – and don’t forget the windshield wipers!

One of the more recent additions to our residential roster, our residential window repair, has saved our customers tens of thousands by repairing fogged windows that would have otherwise needed replaced.  And our visually clear residential tint can help protect from harmful UV rays and improve your home’s energy efficiency, while still complying with strict HOA policies.  We also provide any type of custom cut glass you may need, from patterned glass shower doors to tempered safety glass for sliding glass doors.

But we can’t take credit for all of these ideas, many of them came from our community!  Whether it be our Rochester locals, our online readers, or our friends in the auto glass business – sharing ideas helps businesses work better with their community.  Idea sharing  is why we do this blog, and now we would like to hear from you…

Today we want to find out if there is anything else we can do for you.  Are there any services that you think are lacking in the Rochester area, that we may be able to provide?  A certain brand or type of auto product that you would like to buy locally?  A service you heard about elsewhere, that isn’t available here?  Let us know what you want in the comments below – all ideas will be considered!

Ray Sands Glass Wants to Know What You Think!

We certainly understand that when customers call our shop about a broken windshield, that is it often the result of an unfortunate encounter with a rock on the highway, which they are probably less than happy about.  We also understand that after making their car payment and filling up the gas tank (ugh) people are generally less than happy about having to pay for repairs to their car, which, for so many people these days, can strain the family budget.

With this in mind, we really want to know is – What we can do to make it easier on you?  Aside from giving some of our services away for free (we already do that), how can having your windshield replaced be a little bit better?

Since the best way to find out how people feel about your business is to ask them, that’s what we want to do today.  We want to hear about the customer experience in dealing with not only Ray Sands Glass, but other glass shops across the country or even other types of auto service businesses.   What could the auto glass team have done differently to make things just a little easier?  And no holds barred on this one!   From the greeting at the front desk and the magazine selection, to the quality of workmanship and the communication with the technician – we want to know the good and bad stories about your in experiences in our shop and others.

You can share your stories here or on our facebook page.  We’re looking forward to hearing from you!

2011 Rochester Home and Garden Show

Ray Sands Glass is excited for the Rochester Home and Garden Show next weekend, March 26th and 27th at the Rochester Riverside Convention Center.  We have lots of great residential services to discuss this year for your home’s windows and other interior glass as well.

This year we have seen a lot of interest in our residential window film, with people becoming more aware of the amount of energy being exchanged through their windows.  Some are looking to keep out the sun’s harmful UV rays, and some to reduce their monthly energy bills (and therefore their carbon footprint.)  Whatever their motivation, we are delighted at the opportunity to discuss the benefits of residential window film, answer questions and show off some of our most popular home products!

Another residential window improvement service that we have seen a growing interest in, is our “Get the Fog Out”  window restoration process.  This technique clears the existing window of moisture and uses specially made valves to prevent future moisture buildup, while preserving the insulation value of a double pane window.  All without the hassle, expense or wasted glass of  of a window pane replacement.

This year we will also be presenting a display of some of our work with framed and custom mirrors, which we haven’t featured at home shows in the past.  But we have really enjoyed this more artistic aspect of working with glass, and some of our recent projects show how fun and beautiful it can be to think outside the box!

And of course we will be exploring some of the home uses for Aquapel, everyone’s favorite water repellent for glass ,on exterior windows and glass shower doors.

So while you are out next weekend perusing the variety of home improvements, don’t forget about your windows!  Hope to see you there!

Residential Tinting – More Than Just Energy Savings

As we discussed in the last post, residential window tinting can be an effective way to save energy, which has become so important as people realize that the value of our energy goes beyond the dollar amount on our monthly bill.   But window film can have several benefits to the homeowner, outside of those offered by energy savings.

The solar reflection properties that help keep your energy bills lower, are also protecting your Cause of Fading Chartfurniture and flooring from the sun’s harmful rays.  The sun can often be more damaging to antiques, artwork and fine rugs than the wear and tear of everyday life.   The main causes of fading are shown in the chart to the left – and as you can see, solar energy sources account for a big chunk of the discoloration on some of our most valuable possessions.

Residential tinting film can also provide another type of protection that many people don’t consider a risk until it happens – home window breakage.  We expect a certain level of risk in car window breakage, that’s why the glass on your automobile is either tempered safety glass, or laminated windshield glass.  But most residential window glass is just like any other flat glass, when it breaks, it makes large shards and tiny glass splinters.

When applied to the inside of single or double pane windows residential films can help prevent these shards of the interior glass from scattering all over due to impact damage.  Whether the damage to the window was a kid’s home run ball or a loose branch in a storm, window film can prevent injury or material damage due to flying glass.   Home tinting film can also hold the glass together in case of intentional breakage, making it harder for anyone to maliciously gain access to your home without serious injury to themselves.

Residential window tinting provides a line of protection against everything from faded furniture to flying footballs, on top of the more familiar energy savings.   It’s a wonder more people don’t consider this one of the first options for residential window improvements – it can save your money, your belongings and maybe even your self!
