Can This Windshield Crack Be Repaired?

When it comes to cracks in a windshield the answer can be a bit trickier than when dealing with just a chip.   There are many widely differing opinions on the limits of windshield crack can be repair, but remember that safety should be the number one concern when considering the answers for yourself.  Anyone who has cut glass knows that the most common method for doing so is to etch the glass and then apply pressure – but how big of a crack would be safe in your windshield when under pressure?

While we generally would give the same size related answer – that if you can cover it with a quarter it can be repaired.   But even determining the size of a crack can be difficult, since we often find that the crack is much longer than it appears to the untrained eye. Continue reading

Show Some Love for Local Business

Ray Sands Glass loves small local businesses, and not just because we are one!  We love the Rochester community – the friends, family and neighbors, the friendly faces on the street and in our shop, even all those other drivers out there on the road!  This community has been home to Ray Sands Glass for over 60 years and for many of our employees (and owners) this city holds a piece of family heritage.  We care enough to want what’s best for the Rochester area and it’s citizens, and that means local businesses.

Many people don’t realize how local businesses stimulate local economy so much more than big corporations.  When you spend a dollar here in Rochester at a local business, 43 cents of it stays right here in our area, but when you spend that dollar with a company based elsewhere, only about 19 cents stays here in our city.  Since small businesses are more likely to spend your dollar with other local establishments, you really are investing in your own community, and when you do that, that dollar comes back around to you in the end.

We often go out of our way to spend locally –  we buy an lease our vehicles from local dealerships, we buy our power tools, compressors and urethanes from people right here in our area.  In our efforts to back other local businesses, we have found that these small outfits do the same for us – not just by buying our products and services, but standing by their own, and with top quality service and accountability.

So please join us in supporting this wonderful city we call home, and all those neighbors and friends who benefit from a thriving local business community.  Buy from someone who appreciates your business, someone who is paying taxes to your city, someone who is spend their dollars in your own backyard and someone who cares for this community as much as you do. In short, buy local.  In this little slice of the world, our troubles are all the same and RSG is always glad you came!

All The FREE Home Improvement Info You Could Ever Want

For anyone in the Rochester area that is even considering any type of home improvement, this is a great, free opportunity to shop around the local companies without making a dozen phone calls.  With exhibitors covering every facet of home improvement, outdoors and in, you can ask questions and get some face to face answers from experts in a variety of fields.  We are looking forward to discussing some of our most popular residential glass services with Rochester area residents, and helping them save a few dollars in the process.

One of those popular residential glass services is our “Get the Fog Out” procedure, which can repair windows in which the seal has failed and caused a permanent foggy appearance.  We are really thankful that we have been able to offer this service which has saved our Western New Yorkers thousands upon thousands of dollars over the years, not to mention the tons of glass that is effectively insulating homes, instead of rotting in landfills.   If you have fogged windows in your home, please come talk to us (for free) before you even consider the costly and inconvenient process of window unit replacement.  We may just be able to help you out, the green way, at a fraction of the cost!

And before you head out for the home show, don’t forget to tune into Jim Salmon’s morning home repair clinic on WHAM 1180!  Ray Sands Glass’ General Manager Dave Burns and Sales Manager Chris Green will be on the show discussing our residential fog removal process – how it works and how it saves you money.  You can tune in between 7am and 8am to hear all about Get The Fog Out, and you can catch us at the Fall Home Show Saturday from 10am to 8pm or Sunday from 10am to 6pm.

We look forward to talking to you this weekend, whether it’s over the airwaves or face to face!

See You at The Finger Lakes Riesling Festival!

Ray Sands Glass is getting excited about this year’s Riesling Festival, which will take place this weekend (Saturday and Sunday from 10a-5p) at the Lakeshore Drive and Pier in Canandaigua.   And this, the third annual event promises to be the best ever!  Despite the name, the Finger Lakes Riesling Festival is not just for adults.  There will be fun for the whole family – with a bounce house for the little ones, a 5K for the more athletic, Sunday’s car show (a personal favorite) and of course, an abundance of wonderful local wines and beers for your sampling pleasure!

Not only does the event have great drinks and tasty treats, but they are raising money for a great cause!  Last year the festival was able to raise over $31,000 to benefit the Canandaigua Family YMCA, which uses the funds to help sponsor those who might otherwise be unable to take advantage of their services. Ray Sands Glass Works With Genesee Country Village Museum

As many Western New Yorkers know, the Genesee Country Village and Museum is one of our much beloved local treasures – our very own bit of history.  GCV&M  is a full living history of a 19th century village, complete with over 50 authentically restored buildings, and live interactive programs that educate children and adults alike with a hands on approach to history.

We recently had an opportunity to work with GCV&M, which was really an honor for us, because Ray Sands Glass has a special appreciation for this live museum, not just for the dynamic live history lesson, but for a bit of personal history located amongst it artifacts!  The father of owners Dave and Frank Burns was born in one of the buildings currently used for live demonstrations, even had his tonsils removed by the local doctor at the table  inside! Can Your Small Business Afford to Go Green?

Many small business owners are beginning to ask themselves that very question:  ” Is going green right for my business?”   And the answer is a resounding Yes!    No matter the size or type of business taking a good look at the way your company utilizes resources is beneficial to your future as a business and as a human being living on this planet.  When Ray Sands Glass began to make changes and invest in the plan to be a more environmentally friendly business, we found that these changes were going to save our company some cash in the long run!

A few years ago we had an energy audit to help us get a better idea of how and where our glass shop was using energy – some unnecessarily.   We found that our outdated lighting system was consuming much more electricity than was needed to light our shop.  We then made the decision to finance a new, energy efficient lighting system in our shop and office – which was hugely beneficial to our cause and our business.   The electricity savings of $400 a month paid nearly all of the financing payment, and now that our lights are paid off, that savings can go back into our company. What Else Would You Like to Find at Ray Sands?

Over the years, we have expanded our services from our roots in windshield replacement and chip repair to include many other auto and residential services that we thought could benefit our community.   With the introduction of more services we can now remove those dents and dings from your car’s body as well, or apply a protective film to your newly installed windshield and top of the line window tint for side and rear windows.  We can even restore your car’s headlights to a shiny, bright, like-new condition – and don’t forget the windshield wipers!

One of the more recent additions to our residential roster, our residential window repair, has saved our customers tens of thousands by repairing fogged windows that would have otherwise needed replaced.  And our visually clear residential tint can help protect from harmful UV rays and improve your home’s energy efficiency, while still complying with strict HOA policies.  We also provide any type of custom cut glass you may need, from patterned glass shower doors to tempered safety glass for sliding glass doors.

But we can’t take credit for all of these ideas, many of them came from our community!  Whether it be our Rochester locals, our online readers, or our friends in the auto glass business – sharing ideas helps businesses work better with their community.  Idea sharing  is why we do this blog, and now we would like to hear from you…

Today we want to find out if there is anything else we can do for you.  Are there any services that you think are lacking in the Rochester area, that we may be able to provide?  A certain brand or type of auto product that you would like to buy locally?  A service you heard about elsewhere, that isn’t available here?  Let us know what you want in the comments below – all ideas will be considered!
