Keep Our Troops in Mind This Holiday Season

Veterans Day is the perfect time to remember and give thanks for the courageous men and women who are serving our country, those who have in the past, and those who lost their lives in doing so.  Fortunately, Canadaigua’s Blue Star Mothers offer an opportunity to make sure that your thankfulness conveys to the troops who are currently stationed overseas.   Throughout the year the Blue Star Mothers, with help from the community, send care packages containing some of the comforts of home for the servicemen who are so far from it.

Ray Sands Glass is proud to help support this organization, with your help we would like to make this holiday season a bit more comfortable for the men and women who followed the call of duty.  The BSM have composed a wish list of everyday items that have been requested by military personnel and we would be happy to accept donations of these items at any of our Western NY locations.

To show our thanks for those donating to a great cause we will be offering free windshield repair or Aquapel in exchange for donations to the Blue Star Mothers.  So if you have been postponing the repair of a small chip or crack, stop at the store and pick up a few of the non-crushable items from their wish list and bring them into the shop.  You will have done a good deed by making the holidays a little brighter for someone who misses their family and saved yourself from needing a replacement all at the same time.

Thank You Veterans!

See You at The Finger Lakes Riesling Festival!

Ray Sands Glass is getting excited about this year’s Riesling Festival, which will take place this weekend (Saturday and Sunday from 10a-5p) at the Lakeshore Drive and Pier in Canandaigua.   And this, the third annual event promises to be the best ever!  Despite the name, the Finger Lakes Riesling Festival is not just for adults.  There will be fun for the whole family – with a bounce house for the little ones, a 5K for the more athletic, Sunday’s car show (a personal favorite) and of course, an abundance of wonderful local wines and beers for your sampling pleasure!

Not only does the event have great drinks and tasty treats, but they are raising money for a great cause!  Last year the festival was able to raise over $31,000 to benefit the Canandaigua Family YMCA, which uses the funds to help sponsor those who might otherwise be unable to take advantage of their services. Thanks from Blue Star Mothers and Ray Sands Glass

We wanted to share this letter that we recently received from the Blue Star Mothers of Rochester:

Blue Star Mothers salute Ray Sands

The Blue Star Mothers of America Inc., New York Chapter 1, would like to send a heartfelt “thank you” to Ray Sands Glass, both in Chili and Canandaigua, for their tremendous support.

The company has made us the beneficiary of funds that they raised with their project of having customers who came in for a repair of chips in their windshields make a donation to the Blue Star Mothers in lieu of payment. People were also encouraged to leave donations, which we then shipped to our deployed troops.

The funds enabled us to send Christmas trees and boxes to our soldiers in both Iraq and Afghanistan, to assist eight military families in need and get supplies for the Blue Star Canteen and the veterans who come there.

We are most grateful to Ray Sands and all the customers who gave so
generously. We can’t thank them enough.

Blessings on everyone.

—JOYCE E. MADER

BLOOMFIELD, ONTARIO COUNTY

We want to thank everyone who came in and made donations of both cash and goods, many of whom didn’t even need an auto glass service.  It’s good to know that with our combined efforts we were able to make a difference for a group that is so deserving of our help.

We are honored to work with the Blue Star Mothers to help a worthy cause – and we would like to salute all the brave men and women who have served or are currently serving our nation.  Our greatest thanks goes to you!

Help for Those Not “Home for the Holidays”

The Blue Star Mothers of Rochester is an organization working toward a cause that is truly near and dear to our hearts – bringing comfort to those who have served or are currently serving our country.  These are the mothers who put on a brave face through the heartbreak of having a loved one serving overseas – and set hard to work here at home, with very little financial help from government organizations.

This holiday season, the Blue Star Mothers could really use some help in bringing a bit of  Christmas to those who are unable to be with their families and friends.  They have a wish list on their website, of items that they desperately need to keep our troops comfortable while they live in a strange place, in these often harsh environments.   This year, the Mothers are working on a special Christmas package to bring home to those who can’t be home, which includes the tree and trimmings – with gifts to go underneath.  Any donations you wish to contribute can be brought to our Chili Ave. shop any time, as the Blue Star Mothers send care packages year round.

And of course, cash donations are always welcome.  When we first began working with the Blue Star Mothers, they had packages prepared and ready to go, but lacked the funds to get them to the troops.   Your help is so greatly appreciated by not only the Blue Star Mothers, but those sons and daughters, mothers and fathers, husbands and wives,  and brothers and sisters who are bravely risking their lives for our nation.

Have a Happy Holiday, and keep our troops in your thoughts and prayers!

Windshield Chip, Scratch and Crack Repair

Ray Sands Glass loves windshield repair.  Not just because it’s our job, or that it makes damaged glass beautiful again.  It’s because it helps our friends in the Rochester community save money, and it is, by nature, the green alternative.  We believe that being green is an essential part of what makes a business an asset to its community, and this belief has motivated us to make a lot of changes around the shop and provide free repair to our customers – so they don’t wait until the damage becomes too extensive.

But we want customers to understand that not all damage can be repaired, and the limitations are dictated mostly by safety.  As a general rule, damage that cannot be covered by a quarter cannot be repaired, but there are some exceptions to this guideline.   Some smaller damage can be too extensive, or even too slight for repair.

A scratch on your auto glass can be an eyesore as well as an obstruction in your line of vision when driving.  And while light scratches can be fixed, the rule of thumb states that if you can feel it with you fingernail, it cannot be repaired.   The opposite idea applies to small nicks in the glass, often caused by flying highway debris, which can be too slight to affect the structure of the windshield or to fix aesthetically.

But even if you have doubts about whether or not your windshield damage could be beyond repair  we encourage all our friends in Rochester to come on in to the shop on June 12th.  We can take a look at it and if it is fixable we will do the repairs FREE on the spot.   If not we can schedule a replacement, either down at our shop, or at your home or office!   And remember this event is for charity so clean out those closets and storage spaces and come on in!

Fix Your Chips on June 12th

Ray Sands Glass is proud to be partnering with our friends at 92 WBEE, Today’s Country Station, to invite Rochester area residents to our Fix It Fast Festival!   The Bee’s own Newman will be joining us as host of the event, where we will be encouraging car owners to come in and get their minor windshield chips and nicks repaired FREE, before it turns into a larger problem.

The festival will take place on June 12th from 10am to noon, with a special offer on Aquapel rain repellent applications as well as the chip repairs.  You can come in and have the long-lasting windshield treatment applied by our own glass professionals for a special price of $9.25, with some of the proceeds from this service going to our local Goodwill organization.

We will also be accepting donations at the Fix It Fast Festival for Goodwill –  including clothing, small furniture and appliances, books and computers and anything that could be of use instead of eventually filling a landfill.  If you think that someone else could use it, Goodwill will probably take it!   So get rid of any useful items cluttering up your home and bring them down to Ray Sands Glass – you can enjoy some snack chips, fix you windshield chips and make a contribution to a worthy local charity, all while enjoying some great music and even better people.

Saving with Windshield Repair

We came across this article from the Sammamish Reporter that echoes the sentiments of the auto glass community regarding the importance of prompt repair of chips and nicks in you auto glass.  Thousands of windshields are replaced nationwide every year that should never have needed it.  Which means that not only are consumers spending money that they don’t need to spend, but tons of non-recyclable glass is being unnecessarily thrown into landfills.

There used to be a time when the only thing to do was to either ignore them or replace the whole windshield, an expensive undertaking which can set you back $300 to $400.

Dick Walker, owner of Eastside Mobile Auto Glass, said that he had seen quite a few people bring their cars in over the past few weeks to have their windshields repaired, before they needed replacing.

“It makes a lot of sense,” Walker said. “If you get the chip while it is still small, we can repair it before it spreads and cracks. A repair job costs about $40, but if you wait and the windshield needs repairing, then it will cost hundreds.”

Walker, who has been in business for 29 years and in Issaquah for 18, says that this time of year, a lot of the cracks start to grow.

It’s the warmer weather – the glass starts to slowly expand and the cracks that were made in the winter put strain and stress on the windshield.

The good news for motorists is that most insurance companies will pay for a windshield repair.

“A lot of them will even waive the deductible,” said Walker.

And if you are in the Rochester, NY area, repair is FREE with a small donation of pet supplies to help support our community animal shelters.  As little a five pounds of cat or dog food could save you a windshield replacement a few months down the line.

Even for those non-New York-ers the cost, time and materials saved should be a big enough motivator to get you down to your local NGA Certified glass shop for a quick easy and painless repair to your chipped windshield
